A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation

Announcing a New Survivor Program - Movement & Physical Activity

Research shows that for most people, exercise is safe and helpful before, during, and after cancer treatment. It can help improve your quality of life, and in some cases, save it. Data shows that people diagnosed with cancer who regularly exercise reduced their risk of dying from all causes by 25% compared with people who did not exercise.

A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation (ABOH) knows that lung cancer patients are living longer than ever before and therefore, have new unmet needs. One is the need for help to overcome the anxiety that accompanies a diagnosis.

ABOH introduced the first-of-its kind Experiential Survivorship Program in August to assist lung cancer patients and caregivers in living their best life. Phase 1 of this new program was Mindfulness, which is now available and includes an on-line audio companion and monthly live on-line classes.

To Learn More, Click Here.

ABOH is honored to announce phase two of the Experiential Survivorship Program: Movement & Physical Activity!

The Movement & Physical Activity Program consists of three online videos developed by local physical fitness experts that demonstrate gentle movements and exercises specifically for lung cancers to practice before, during and after treatment. Each video features a warm-up, multiple strength segments, and a cool-down segment, with variations to accommodate beginners, intermediate, and advanced participants. It is truly a program for everyone!

The key to exercising is to find the right amount of exercise to energize you and improve your health, without causing any harm or fatigue. Even small amounts of exercise can improve your outcomes. When in doubt about exercise, always ask your medical team for advice.

Simple movement and physical activity can:

  • Improve your mood: Exercise can help with stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Increase your energy: Exercise can help you feel more energized and motivated.
  • Help with breathing: Exercise can help with breathing problems like shortness of breath.
  • Maintain your muscle mass: Exercise can help maintain muscle mass and function.
  • Reduce fatigue: Exercise can help reduce fatigue, nausea, and discomfort.
  • Prevent disease recurrence: Exercise can help prevent disease recurrence.

The Black Breast Cancer Experience logo

Cancer Legal Care has joined forces with LaShaune P. Johnson, PhD (a three time cancer survivor and professional troublemaker) to better understand Black family breast cancer journeys.

In our ongoing efforts to support more inclusive practices in our work, we are starting a series of exploratory conversations about the relationship that medical legal partnerships such as CLC have in the lived experiences of Black families and communities.

If you are willing to lend your wisdom as a patient/survivor or a caregiver in a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Johnson, please go to cancerlegalcare.org/the-cookout/ for more information or contact Dr. Johnson directly at TheCookOut@estellalucia.com.
