Social Work Month

Did you know social work support is available with Minnesota Oncology?

There are four dedicated social workers, available to help support and navigate a patient’s experience, beyond the physical.

March is Social Work Month, and our team wants to introduce ourselves, share who we are, and what role we play in your care at Minnesota Oncology. Social Workers are licensed professionals who work in a variety of settings, providing support to individuals, families, communities, and society.  We meet people where they are and provide compassionate guidance, support, and assistance.

The Vital Role of Oncology Social Workers in Cancer Care

While you are focusing on healing and recovery, social workers want to mitigate any barriers you may have to achieving your treatment goals. We know that cancer impacts the whole person; this includes relationships, spirituality, emotional and mental well-being, self-image, work, family, financial, and the logistics of everyday living.

We are a group of dedicated professionals working in collaboration with your medical team to support you and your family through the emotional and practical challenges of cancer.

Empathetic Allies in the Cancer Journey

Oncology social workers are trained professionals who specialize in helping patients navigate the complex emotional landscape and everyday logistical challenges that may accompany a cancer diagnosis.  We can provide a compassionate ear and a shoulder to lean on during a time when patients and families may feel overwhelmed and vulnerable.  We can be the people that help you and your family explore serious topics with compassion and understanding.  We understand the profound impact that cancer can have on a person’s mental health and overall well-being and can offer guidance and support every step of the way.

Navigators of Resources

One of the key roles of an oncology social worker is to connect patients with essential resources. Whether it’s finding financial assistance, navigating employment issues, providing transportation options, locating support groups, supporting Advanced Care Planning, or exploring community resources, we are adept at helping patients access the services and supports you need. We can also assist with navigating the often-confusing healthcare system, ensuring that patients receive the care and support they deserve.

Advocates for Patients and Families

Cancer doesn’t just affect the individual diagnosed; it ripples through families and communities. Oncology social workers are advocates not only for patients but also for their loved ones. We work closely with families to address concerns, facilitate communication, and provide education about cancer. By offering family support, we help families to cope with the emotional and practical challenges they face.

Bridging the Communication Gap

Effective communication is critical in cancer care, and oncology social workers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between patients and healthcare providers. We ensure that patients’ voices are heard, their concerns are addressed, and their preferences are respected.  We engage in conversations to help patients process information and explore and identify their individual values and healthcare wishes.  This is an important part of empowering a person to advocate on their own behalf.  By fostering open communication, we help to support a patient-centered approach to care, where individuals feel empowered to make informed decisions about their treatment.

Supporting the Whole Person

Cancer care is not just about treating the disease; it’s about supporting the whole person. Oncology social workers understand that patients are more than their diagnosis, and we strive to address the social, emotional, spiritual, logistical, and psychological aspects of care.  We offer counseling, support groups, and peer mentorship program referrals to help patients manage the stress, anxiety, and depression that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. By addressing these psychosocial needs, oncology social workers contribute to the overall well-being and quality of life of their patients.

We are dedicated and committed to providing compassionate support to you and your family, as part of the cancer care team, during one of life’s most challenging journeys.

If you would like to connect with a social worker, please let your care team know or give us a call.
