Leukemia Risk Factors

Leukemia Risk Factors

Risk factors are anything that may increase your risk of developing leukemia. The presence of risk factors does not mean you are guaranteed to develop leukemia, just like the absence of risk factors does not mean you won’t develop leukemia. However, it is important to be aware of your risk factors so you can take charge of your health.

  • Previous Cancer Treatment
If you have previously had chemotherapy or radiation therapy for a different type of cancer, you may have an increased risk of developing some types of leukemia.
  • Genetic Disorders
Some genetic abnormalities, including Down syndrome are associated with a higher risk of developing leukemia.
  • Blood Disorders
Some non-cancer blood disorders, like myelodysplastic syndrome, may develop into leukemia.
  • Smoking
Smoking may increase your risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia. Exposure to chemicals like benzene, which is found in cigarette smoke, may also increase your risk.
