Second Annual Hope in Motion 5K & Family Walk Draws More Than 700 Participants

Saint Paul, Minn. – More than 700 cancer survivors and their families, friends, caretakers, and healthcare professionals participated in the third annual Hope in Motion 5K and Family Walk yesterday to celebrate life with fellow survivors, inspire those recently diagnosed, and remember those we have lost. Held annually on National Cancer Survivors Day, the event provides an opportunity to celebrate life with fellow survivors, inspire those recently diagnosed, and remember those we have lost. The event honors survivors of all types of cancers, at all stages of the cancer journey – whether they were diagnosed recently or have been cancer free for decades.

The event, presented by Minnesota Oncology, raised more than $50,000 for Angel Foundation, a Minnesota

nonprofit that provides adults in active cancer treatment and their families with financial assistance to pay for non-medical expenses such as rent, mortgage, utilities, phone bills, and more. Angel Foundation also provides education and support for children and teenagers who have a parent or caregiver with cancer.

“With the help of Minnesota Oncology, we are making a real difference in the lives of people who need help the most,” said Andrew Rosen, President of Angel Foundation. “Minnesota Oncology’s generosity is a big reason why we have been able to provide more than $6 million in total emergency financial assistance since our founding.”

Some of the participants were Minnesota Oncology patients in recovery who have been training their bodies for this event.

“Participating in Hope in Motion for the third consecutive year was a blessing,” said Dennis Seifert, a survivor who has been cancer-free since December 2011. “This year, I walked with my family, friends, and loved ones in loving memory of my wife. The day was filled with warm memories that I will cherish for a long time.”

Below were the top 5K finishers among the cancer survivors who participated.

Male:                    Marc Thompson, 43, of Forest Lake, with a time of 24:08

Female:                Joanna Cheyka, 45, of Inver Grove Heights, with a time of 23:26

Male Age Group 20-29: Kayitta Johnson, 25, with a time of 29:24

Female Age Group 20-29: Brittney Greenslit, 26, with a time of 25:51

Male Age Group 30-39: Jacob Hallen, 39, with a time of 19:58

Female Age Group 30-39: Kelly Youker, 34, with a time of 26:53

Male Age Group 40-49: Warren Knapp, 45, with a time of 23:48

Female Age Group 40-49: Joanna Cheyka, 45, with a time of 23:28

Male Age Group 50-59: Erich Schwab, 50, with a time of 23:22

Female Age Group 50-59: Kathryn McLachlan, 53, with a time of 27:06

Male Age Group 60-99: John Roeske, 67, with a time of 21:18
