DeAnna Wichmann credits the Sage program with saving her life. Sage is a breast and cervical cancer screening program in Minnesota. For eligible women, Sage provides free office visits for breast and cervical exams, as well as a screening mammogram and Pap tests.
In 2010, Wichmann read about a Sage screening in her church bulletin. Because she was not working and had no health insurance coverage, Wichmann took advantage of the free examinations and was diagnosed with breast cancer. She began treatment at Minnesota Oncology’s Minneapolis Clinic, where she is currently under the care of Dr. Tim Larson. Her treatment included a lumpectomy and radiation.
The 49-year-old Minneapolis resident says she was thrilled to learn about Hope in Motion and the opportunity to celebrate survivorship. She will walk the 5K course with her friend in July. “I try to surround myself with positive people,” Wichmann says. “This is more of a celebration than a research fundraiser. I want to celebrate that I survived.”
